Emma Slaymaker (b. 1993, Knoxville, Tennessee) is an artist studying and working in Strasbourg, France. Currently an MFA student in painting at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin, Emma’s work draws its inspiration from an invisible tension that emerges at the threshold between an emotion and its transformation to action. These moments are not necessarily fleeting; on the contrary, they can stretch out and resist their own resolution. Through drawing and painting, using academic and figurative techniques, she seeks to bring these inner states—often discreet or uncomfortable—into existence within a register that is generally foreign to them. Her
work thus invites the viewer to linger in this in-between space, to inhabit a liminal and intimate zone where something persists without yet resolving itself.
